Few years back, I wrote an article about world leaders and the tactics used to get to the top. At the time, I was especially focusing on the methods and ideologies used to run for the presidential office of the United States. In that article I said, “whatever tactics you use to get to the top, will be the same tactics you will use to govern by.”
For example, if fear is your bases for influencing people to favor you, then fear will be the method used to maintain that position of influence. Now, as we watch, seemingly one of the most intense elections ever, the words and slogans being used by each candidate to gain the vote of the people is quite colorful, to say the least. This last republican debate, for the most part, was fueled by a desperate grasp for power. At the helm of this desperate attempt was the working of fear.
Fear tactics seems to be at the top of the list for most presidential candidates. This appears to be the case in the evangelical Christian world as well. It is true, these methods of fear are not limited to the governmental elections of this nation, and they’re just as evident in the government of the church. For centuries, fear has played a key role in coercing many people into Christian obedience.
Jesus came to love us into a relationship, not scare us into one. God so loved the world that he gave… (John 3:16) When it comes to the selection of future leadership, fear should never be the bases of choice. Discernment, wisdom and understanding should always be our choice foundation for determining the intent of God for his people.
Whenever fear becomes you motivator for decision-making, you have just given your emotions the power to govern your life. Fear is not, nor has it ever been, an accurate base for sound judgment.
Paul writes to Timothy,
“For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”
Another word for “timidity” is cowardice or fear. Another word for “discipline” is judgment. In other words, ‘let the inheritance of your faith, which was in your grandmother and mother be in you.’ Which means, they were not governed by a spirit of fear or cowardice, but by the power of love and good judgment.’
When your choice of government is based on fear and not the wisdom and love of God, in the end, you will be subject to the government of fear, rather than the power of God’s love, which will always enable us to judge rightly.
Just because someone claims to be a Christian does not make him or her the best choice of government. It’s certainly a plus, but it’s a long ways from knowing how to lead a country in the right direction. If you own a business and are looking for someone to manage that business, while being a follower of Jesus Christ is a plus, it certainly does not qualify anyone to be a good business manager. A good business manager needs business skills and the character to back it up.
Yet, oddly enough, when it comes to the Christian world, the idea of being a Christian seems to be the resounding qualification for presidency. As long as a candidate confesses to be a Christian, regardless of their deceitful persuasions, far too many are quick to come to their aide. It’s interesting how all is justified in the name of “for the sake of the country.” No doubt, the choices of manipulations are many. Whether it is fear, lying, greed or some other tool of divisiveness, at the end of the day, you have to decide what kind of spirit you are of.
I believe this presidential election is a test of our spiritual maturity. Nonetheless, in terms of government, the outcome of current government is temporary. At the very best, it’s merely a guardian to spiritual maturity. The intent of God is to rise up the government of heaven on earth. This government looks like peace, not war. It looks like unity, not division. It looks like love, not hate. All of these and more are characteristics of our Father’s house of glory.
If you perceive a world that is hopeless and destined to dissolve into ultimate chaos, then all of the above will be of no value to you.
However, if you actually believe “My kingdom come, my will be done on Earth as it is in heaven” then your perception of the future will carry the impact of a positive outcome for all of creation. While there is a healthy “fear” in terms of reverence, any other form is the epitome of hopeless demise. Let me caution you not to get sucked up into the vacuum of the political world. It’s hypnotic abilities are intensely influential and have the power to persuade you into a government that is contrary to the will of God for his people.
Do not give into the lie that says, “God will elect whoever he wants for President”
“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” (Romans 13:1)
While biblical history shows kings being selected by God, it was done so through prophets like “Samuel anointing David” or other individuals that were capable of hearing God’s voice. However, the elective process of today is quite different. Today, the people are given the power of choice. Whether they adhere to the intent of God is up to them. Though all the above is subject to divine intervention, ultimately, the power of governmental choice comes down to “we the people.”
What is divinely ordained is “authority,” not governmental institutions. The rulers Paul was speaking of were authorities given to protect the people from the intent of evil and were considered ministers of God for the greater good.
Again, Paul writes,
“Rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good.”
The intended government of heaven is in you. Giving yourself over to the governmental intent of God, as if it were out of your hands is nothing less than foolishness and ignorance at work. God has given you the power of choice. He has given you the ability to discern the future of this nation, and the world. You have the power to make sound decisions outside the government of fear. You are the sons of God upon the earth. The mind of Christ is in you. God has given you the spirit of wisdom and understanding. You are the constitution of heaven on Earth. You are the governmental persuasion that will determine the next President of these United Sates. Now is the time to place religion beneath your feet, looking beyond the mind of republican and democratic persuasion. God has determined that either will no longer rule this nation, yet the choice is ours to make. Which means, a government no longer under “lobbyist” control is now on the table of this nation. Now is the time for the government of God to descend from heaven, revealing its sonship beyond anything we have ever known.
